Surgeon warns about lack of cosmetic surgery regulation

A lack of proper industry checks has led to a rise in the number of 'cowboy' practitioners offering cosmetic surgery, a leading surgeon has said.

Speaking ahead of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons' (Baaps) annual conference, Douglas McGeorge said that self-regulation could be disastrous, particularly in the field of the non-surgical cosmetic filler Botox, the BBC reports.

The surgeon revealed: "Basically if you wanted to have Botox administered on a park bench, you could do it these days.

"To foster a 'wild west' approach is not only an affront to reputable professionals who follow the rules, but ultimately creates an unsafe environment for the public," he remarked.

While non-cosmetic surgical procedures carry little risk when performed by reputable practitioners, the majority of people prefer to look after their skin via more natural methods.

Products containing aloe vera or lavender are believed to be particularly good for the complexion, and dietary supplements of vitamins A and E can also help to maintain healthy skin.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18297254-ADNFCR
