Lack of sleep doubles risk of death from heart disease

UK researchers have discovered that people who do not get enough sleep more than double their risk of death from heart disease or stroke.

Scientists from the University of Warwick and University College London studied the effects of sleep patterns on mortality among 10,308 civil servants.

They found that those who cut their regular amount of sleep from seven hours to five hours or less during the study period were 1.7 times more likely to die, and twice as likely to die from cardiovascular disease in particular.

"Sleep represents the daily process of physiological restitution and recovery, and lack of sleep has far-reaching effects," said Professor Francesco Cappucio from the University of Warwick's Warwick Medical School.

"In terms of prevention, our findings indicate that consistently sleeping around seven hours per night is optimal for health and a sustained reduction may predispose to ill-health."

Consumers who find it hard to get a good night's sleep may benefit from inhaling soothing lavender oil or acquiring a sleep aid kit, which contains lavender products and a special guide to achieving a restful night's sleep.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18293852-ADNFCR
