Britons risk health through poor diet

Nearly two thirds of people are risking their health by not eating the recommended five daily portions of fruit and vegetables, researchers have found.

Fruit and vegetables are packed with vital vitamins and minerals, but many people do not eat enough and need to boost their intake through dietary supplements, a survey by Cancer Research UK shows.

Just 34 per cent of respondents to the charity's latest survey said that they regularly eat five portions of fruit and vegetables each day, meaning that they are at increased risk of poor health.

According to Sara Hiom, director of health information at Cancer Research UK, the food we eat has a "big influence" on health, contributing to around one quarter of all cancer deaths.

Meanwhile, Weight Concern's Charlene Shoneye said that fruit and vegetables can "aid weight loss and help prevent obesity but we are still not eating enough".

The survey suggests that consumers living in Northern Ireland are most likely to need vitamin and mineral supplements, as only 17 per cent said that they meet the recommended 'five-a-day' target.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18290161-ADNFCR
