Eye test may highlight need for supplements

A new eye test is being used by a Midlands-based eye doctor that alerts patients to the need for dietary supplements, it has been revealed.

Alan Tyler, an optometrist with practices in Solihull and Birmingham, is now offering patients the option to undergo a test with the Macuscope, a testing instrument that measures the density of a pigment in the eye.

Low levels of macular protective pigment indicate that a patient has a heightened risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) - the leading cause of vision loss among over-50s in the UK.

However, the test enables patients to make dietary changes and take supplements to restore pigment density and prevent the loss of their eyesight.

Tom Bremridge, chief executive of the UK's Macular Disease Society, commented: "Early diagnosis of AMD is very important.

"The follow-on advice about nutrition will also be extremely valuable."

Mr Tyler added that he hopes to save the unnecessary loss of sight for many patients.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18285204-ADNFCR
