Multivitamins appear to be a popular way of ensuring an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals, a new survey has found.
Researchers found that a third of people were taking multivitamins, and a further 24 per cent had taken them at some point.
Twenty-seven per cent of male respondents to the MyProtein poll also revealed that they had taken a sports supplement in the past alongside an exercise regime, as had three per cent of women.
Personal trainer and sports nutritionist Rich Smith commented: "If used correctly, sports supplements can be highly effective, legitimate ways to aid in your progress, no matter who you are, male or female, no matter what age or experience."
Mr Smith acknowledged that there is a "stigma" attached to sports supplements, with many not realising that they are "an easy way to ingest higher amounts of protein, the building blocks for healthy growth and repair of muscle tissue".
"If people could stomach or afford large quantities of protein-rich foods such as chicken and fish, they would achieve the same results by ingesting the same macro-nutrients," he pointed out.
