Pet owners warned against dangerous treats

Giving your pets high-calorie foods can be extremely bad for their health and puts them at risk of obesity, experts have warned.

According to specialist insurer Rias, many of the nation's 14.5 million dogs and cats receive inappropriate treats that are meant for humans.

While owners may think they are being kind to their pet, they could actually be causing them harm.

With statistics showing that Britain's cats and dogs are among the most overweight in Europe, Rias is urging pet owners to keep an eye on their pets' diet.

Managing director Janet Connor commented: "Clearly protecting the health and wellbeing of pets is of paramount importance - after all, they are usually considered part of the family.

"We strongly advise that owners take preventative action rather than wait until a serious problem occurs."

Vets recommend that pet owners take action if their dog or cat is more than 15 per cent over its ideal weight.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18575552-ADNFCR
