Horse charity aims to tackle obesity

A leading horse charity is increasing its efforts to fight equine obesity with the help of a donation of weighing devices.

Horse feed manufacturer Dodson & Horrell has given the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) 25 weightapes, which can be used to weigh horses and keep track of their health.

According to the ILPH, obesity is the biggest threat to horses' welfare in the UK and the charity has been running a road show to educate owners about how much their horses should weigh.

Chief executive Roly Owers told Horse and Hound magazine: "It's much easier to bring an underweight animal up to weight than it is to reduce a horse's weight when it is obese.

"And it's much harder to seize overweight horses than ones that are underweight - because overweight horses are just seen as 'healthy'," he revealed.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18572994-ADNFCR
