Probiotic supplements could help to bolster the immune system and protect travellers against the digestive problems that so often ruin overseas holidays, experts have claimed.
According to a recent survey, the top four emerging holiday hotspots this year are Tunisia, Egypt, Thailand and India.
However, all of these are renowned for poor hygiene and tourists often contract bacterial infections that cause diarrhoea.
Dr Georges Mouton, an international intestinal health expert, commented: "The balance of bacteria in the intestines is fragile and can easily be disrupted. It's not uncommon for food and drink in tropical or sub-tropical countries to be contaminated by harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli (E.coli)."
Dr Mouton recommended three simple steps to reduce the risk of diarrhoea while on holiday.
He advised: "Regular hand washing, minimising intake of raw foods and avoiding tap water when abroad are the basic precautions, but the most effective solution is to take a specially formulated probiotic."
