Egyptian scientists have discovered that green tea could be a useful asset in the fight against resistant superbugs.
Some bacteria have evolved drug-resistant strains that do not respond to antibiotics.
Researchers at Alexandra University have now found that drinking green tea can increase the effectiveness of antibiotics by up to three times.
They tested green tea with antibiotics against 28 disease-causing micro-organisms and found that drinking green tea while taking antibiotics reduced the bacteria's drug resistance, even in the case of superbugs.
Dr Mervat Kassem, a member of the university's Faculty of Pharmacy, commented: "In every single case green tea enhanced the bacteria-killing activity of the antibiotics."
The expert also revealed: "In the future, we will be looking at other natural herb products such as marjoram and thyme to see whether they also contain active compounds which can help in the battle against drug resistant bacteria."
