Research shows that just one in five people are getting the recommended eight hours sleep a night, leaving many feeling exhausted all of the time.
A study by Crampex found that 46 per cent regularly get six or fewer hours of sleep per night and two thirds are regularly kept awake by stress or worry.
Dr Chris Idzikowski, a sleep expert at the Edinburgh Sleep Centre, commented: "It seems we are heading for an exhaustion meltdown as a nation.
"It is vital everyone makes time to get plenty of good quality sleep. A good night's sleep not only keeps you feeling alert and refreshed, but it can also help weight loss, reduce depression and keep you feeling at your best," he revealed.
Dr Idzikowski recommends maintaining a regular evening routine to help you relax before bedtime.
In addition, he suggests taking action if you experience nocturnal muscle cramps or are regularly disturbed by a partner's snoring.
Alternatively, consumers could try soothing lavender oil to help them drift off to sleep.
