A growing number of horse owners are turning to herbal products to maintain their horses' health, experts claim.
Examples of herbs that can be beneficial to horses include lavender, echinacea, witch hazel, milk thistle and garlic, all of which are also commonly used as dietary supplements by humans.
Don Silver, manager of the US firm Equine Science, believes that herbal products are much better than chemicals as they offer a more natural way to treat health complaints.
"Herbs treat problems naturally and holistic medicine treats the causes, not just the symptoms," he told the Mid-South Horse Review.
"The horse will be healthier if you keep chemicals out of his body. Its goal is to keep the horse healthier, which is also a lot cheaper," he noted.
Mr Silver also confirmed that holistic medicine is becoming more accepted and popular among horse owners.
According to the expert, even vets are coming around to the idea of herbal treatments and some now recommend holistic medicines alongside their conventional treatments.
