Elderly should take calcium, vitamin D, say experts
A new study into ways of improving health has found that elderly people can benefit from taking calcium and vitamin D supplements.
Researchers from the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Centre surveyed existing scientific literature and have now recommended a number of simple lifestyle changes that can contribute to significant health improvements.
One of the key messages from the research, which is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, is that calcium and vitamin D supplements help to slow rates of bone loss and reduce the number of bone fractures in over-65s.
Lead editor Dr Richard Rivlin, professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, said: "I think this is an extremely important and positive message. Many elderly people feel that it is too late for them to improve their health, but that is simply not true."
The study also found that weight training can help to prevent osteoporosis, as well as improving the ability to burn calories.
