A new study by researchers in Israel has found a link between obesity and bad breath.
A team at Tel Aviv University investigated the daily habits and breath odour of 88 adults with varying weights and heights.
Their findings revealed a direct link between obesity and bad breath, as well as an association between unpleasant breath odour and alcohol consumption.
Professor Mel Rosenberg, from the Department of Human Microbiology and the Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, commented: "The finding on alcohol and bad breath was not surprising because the anecdotal evidence was already there.
"However, the finding that correlated obesity to bad breath was unanticipated."
The researchers are unsure of the reason behind the link, but suggest that it may be due to obese people eating a diet that promotes the condition of dry mouth.
People with bad breath may benefit from placing a couple of drops of peppermint oil on the tongue each day, or drinking peppermint or spearmint teas.
