Study finds vitamins are destroyed by tap water

New research has shown that unfiltered tap water could be washing away many of the nutrients in food.

Results from the study by water filtration company Aqua Optima showed that 58 per cent of vitamin C was destroyed by tap water within one hour, whereas only three per cent was destroyed in the same time period with filtered water.

It is thought that the copper in household water pipes is to blame for this. Studies have shown that 95 per cent of vitamin C would be destroyed in an hour.

Speaking to website Keep The Doctor Away, scientist Dr Richard Johnston said: "Keen to get our 'five-a-day', we rush to consume as many fruit and vegetables as we can. [But] from simply watering down a glass of orange juice to boiling our carrots, we reduce the health benefits of those foods."

Dr Johnston also remarked that the slower decomposition of vitamin C in filtered water was "entirely due to the performance of the filter". ADNFCR-1167-ID-18255343-ADNFCR
