Consumers need to take care of more than just their skin when sunbathing, an expert has suggested.
According to Dr Nick Lowe, a consultant dermatologist at the Cranley Clinic, people who are taking steps to protect themselves against sunlight could be at risk of vitamin deficiencies.
Exposure to sunlight is known to promote the manufacture of vitamin D in the body, which is important for healthy bones and teeth.
Dr Lowe commented: "Vitamins are useful and if you're protecting against sunlight it's very important to take a multivitamin and one that also contains vitamin D, and the most active form of vitamin D is vitamin D3.
"That will help with prevention of bone density loss and there is some evidence that vitamin D3 may help control incidents of some cancers," the expert revealed.
He also suggests boosting levels of iron, which will promote healthy hair, nails and skin.
