It stands to reason that as
our bodies get older the more care and attention they
need. There are several tell-tale signs that you can
use to measure the areas of the body that may need
help.
1. BLOOD PRESSURE Raises your risk of kidney
damage, strokes and heart disease. It is recommended
that blood pressure checks are taken periodically
as
there are no obvious symptoms.
Reduce your risk: By simply taking things such
as salt and alcohol in moderation the chances are
the level of risk will be reduced. Get regular exercise
and eat at least 5 portions of fruit every day. Where to get tested: You can visit your local
GP for a free checkup. You may also enquire at your
local pharmacist to see if they provide the service.
2. BODY FAT If you are overweight you are
more at risk of heart disease and diabetes. Reduce your risk: You should eat fruit and
vegetables and reduce fat intake. Regular exercise
will also be of benefit. Where to get tested: A simple check is just
by measuring your waistline!
3. BOWEL CANCER Symptoms may be noticeable
in your bowel habits, losing weight for no reason,
or blood or mucus in your faeces. Reduce your risk: You should eat a high fibre
diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Again, regular
exercise may be of benefit. Where to get tested: Visit your GP who will
take tests and refer you to the appropriate consultant,
if necessary
4. PROSTATE
CANCER Up to 2 Million men in the
UK have Prostate problems most of which are relatively
harmless however the symptoms - which
include needing to urinate frequently, particularly
at night - are similar to Prostate cancer, so its
important to get them checked
right away.
Reduce your risk: You
should eat a diet high in fruit and vegetables and
low in animal fat. For more information call the Prostate
Cancer Charity Helpline on 0845 3008383. Where to get tested: Visit your GP who will
take a blood test for prostate specific antigens and
refer you to the appropriate consultant, if necessary.
5. MOLES
Be vigilant if you notice any new moles or moles that
have recently changed appearance. This is more common
in women than men. Watch out for bleeding and scratching.
Reduce your risk: The damage from sun exposure
is caused in childhood and causes melanoma in adulthood,
often when youre 40+.
Where to get tested: Visit your GP who will
refer you to a dermatology clinic, if necessary.
